ASUS | H87 pro | 13.1 | some initial challenges
1) stock grub2 loader (grubx64.efi) from 13.1 error booting linux "invalid sector size 65535". an outdated grub2 (installer) is bundled in the DVD distribution for 13.1 solution: some clues from: http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?35382#discussion apparently the stock open suse 13.1 DVD seemed to be distributed with an 'older' version of grub2 the EFI loader that gives an invalid sector size error. I'm not sure if this is a board related error. The issue is resolved by updating grub2 from the update repositories and re-doing all the grub2 install. this bummer is initially a road block getting linux to boot off HD. this can be resolved with a grub 2 update and grub2-install done properly. 2) pwmconfig / fancontrol didn't work in the stock 3.11.6 kernel that needs to be fixed with an updated nct6775 driver http://www.spinics.net/lists/lm-sensors/msg40575.html https://github.com/groeck/nct6775 or basically get/compile/install a more updated kernel with the newer nct6775 hwmon driver delivered in the upstream. after fixing the issues the board seemed to work pretty well with most functionalities: lan, usb, gpu (video), audio etc supported within linux opensuse 13.1. linux kvm/qemu (virtualization) works pretty well but it's not sure if there is dependencies to the board

Gigabyte | GA-990FXA-UD3 | 13.1 | Profile | This applies to any other Gigabyte 990/970 AM3+ motherboard
The BIOS is not properly compatible with the Linux kernel out of the box. In order for the kernel to properly detect the USB 2.0 ports, the USB 3.0 ports, and the network card, you must turn on the IOMMU controller in the BIOS then add iommu=soft to the kernel boot parameters. You can do this either in the Yast bootloader module or directly in /etc/default/grub (then run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg as root).
