Installing drivers and set up a Brother HL-2040

Requirements

  • The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is installed (usually installed by default)
  • You need to install RPMs downloaded from Brother's website
  • You are using a USB connection to your printer

Installation

Step 1

Allow your printer to be detected and download the driver software:

  • Plug in your printer and make sure it is turned on.
  • Download brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm from Brother's website e.g. from http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreement/agreement.cgi?dlfile=http://solutions.brother.com/Library/sol/printer/linux/rpmfiles/lpr_others/brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm&lang=English_lpr
  • Download cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm from Brother's website e.g. from http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreement/agreement.cgi?dlfile=http://solutions.brother.com/Library/sol/printer/linux/rpmfiles/cups_wrapper/cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm&lang=English_gpl

Step 2

Install and configure the drivers:

Warning: You must do this in this order!
  • Right click brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and select Open with Install Software
  • Enter root password and proceed with the installation
  • Right click cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and select Open with Install Software
  • Enter root password and proceed with the installation
  • Launch YaST and click Hardware > Printers to set up a print queue, see YaST Printer
