About
Aleph One is an open source game engine that is able to play Bungie's Marathon series. Bungie released only the source code to the Marathon 2 engine back in 2000 as the game could still be purchased. In 2005, Bungie made the Marathon game content freely available but no license was posted with it. In the FAQ, Bungie claimed to still own the copyright of the Marathon series. It is only allowing the free distribution of the series as it no longer is possible to buy the games.
In late 2011, the Aleph One developers began to bundle the game content with the binary releases of the engine. It appears that Bungie has approved of this distribution as they have announced it on their public website.
