On Thursday, December 7, 2006 openSUSE 10.2 was released. The distribution was renamed from SUSE Linux to openSUSE to avoid confusion with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Products. It included the new Kickoff menu for KDE, the new "SLAB" menu for GNOME, switched default file system from ReiserFS to ext3, improved package management, and the then-new compiz windows manger. Along with "SLAB" and Kickoff, the GNOME and KDE desktops were redesigned. openSUSE 10.2 was succeeded by openSUSE 10.3 on Thursday, October 4, 2007.

openSUSE 10.2 maintenance ended on Tuesday, December 18, 2008. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to a currently maintained release. openSUSE 10.2 is still available for download on EOL mirrors.
