openSUSE:Ideas for server installation

Jump to: navigation, search

openSUSE is a very popular on the desktop but that doesn't mean that it can't be used on the server. In fact, it comes with everything you need to set up a (web, mail, etc) server.

openSUSE 11.2 may have a server-flavoured CD besides the DVD, KDE Live CD, GNOME Live CD and netinstall CD.

Ideas

Having several patterns like:

  • LAMP
  • Mail server
  • DNS
  • Firewall
  • Proxy
  • File server (FTP, FTPS, NFS, Samba)
  • Backup server
  • Print server
  • Router
  • Multimedia center/streaming
  • Directory service (OpenLDAP, Active Directory)
  • Build Service (See Build_Service/Build_Service_Installation_Tutorial)
  • Mirroring (MirrorBrain, rsync)

Ideally we would have a YaST module per pattern and the YaST Web modules as well.

Another thing: having a server-targeted kernel would be perfect.

Don't be afraid and add your ideas here! :-)
