Although SLES and openSUSE are widely used in HPC, there are some special applications in the HPC area which are not well known to "normal" SUSE users.

In order to maximize performance, software on an HPC cluster is highly optimized for its architecture. This means that not only the used simulation software, but also its prerequisites should be recompiled for the cluster architecture.
