DigitalSovereignty

openSUSE is a global, community-driven project that brings together contributors, users and organizations from around the world. While our reach and participation are international, openSUSE’s roots are in Europe with SUSE founded in Germany, and openSUSE continues to be a project with a strong European base. This ongoing connection shapes our values of openness, transparency, privacy and trust.

The topic of digital sovereignty is becoming increasingly important as communities and governments seek to maintain control over their digital infrastructure, data and dependencies. For openSUSE, this means ensuring that our project remains independent, transparent and accessible to everyone, regardless of geography or jurisdiction.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we aim to:

  • Map where openSUSE infrastructure and services are hosted
  • Clarify applicable legal frameworks and governance (see Terms of Site)
  • Explore how openSUSE can contribute to digital sovereignty initiatives within Europe and worldwide

Our European origin provides a strong foundation for aligning with EU principles of data protection, open collaboration and public trust, while we continue to build and support a vibrant global community.
