  • Migrating from 11.4 vanilla (KDE 4.6 + KDEPIM 4.4) or 11.4 + OBS repos?

Summary

Due to major changes, users of KMail and Contact upgrading from earlier KDE versions may experience some difficulties. This guide explains how to resolve those problems

Affected Versions

KDE versions from 4.1.0 up to and excluding 4.7.2. openSUSE 11.4 and older. Build Service KDE packages from KDE:Release:46, KDE:Release:45, and early KDE:Release:47

Introduction

openSUSE 12.1 includes Kontact and KMail 4.7, which represent a major rewrite of the email infrastructure, while largely retaining the same user interface. This affects the program's settings and the storage location of mail downloaded from POP servers or offline caches of mail on IMAP servers.

Users upgrading to openSUSE 12.1, either by upgrading their installation, or copying /home dirs from an older installation, must either migrate their PIM data tothe new system or optionally, if it is stored on an IMAP server, redownload it. This includes contacts from KAddressBook, events from KOrganizer, and email messages from KMail, as well as the mail account, calendar and addressbook configuration for these.

An automatic migration tool is included with KDE 4.7.2 in openSUSE 12.1, but it may not be 100% successful and may take a long time to run. Read on to decide whether to use the tool or to manually import your data.

Semantic Desktop Required

The Semantic Desktop (Nepomuk) feature must be enabled to use KMail 4.7 meaningfully. It provides email address completion and mail searching. This means check 'Enable Semantic Desktop' in the Desktop Search module of System Settings. You do not need to enable file indexing (Strigi).

TODO

On 11.10's initial login, the address book and calendar data will be migrated automatically. This should work fine for users of 11.04 and KDE 4.6.x as these items are already using the Akonadi system that is present there.
