The state of multimedia software in Linux is quite mature and this page should help to get an overview what is in a usable state. Wiki articles, howtos and other documentation mentioned here should help to get started quickly.

The main place for discussion is the opensuse-multimedia. Please read here for further information on how to subscribe. The mailing list is certainly archived for research. There is also a German equivalent called opensuse-multimedia-de.
