DigiKam is a photo management software that provides an easy to use interface to order your photos. You can add detailed descriptions to your photos and put them in different directories. Furthermore it provides a feature called KIPI (KDE Image Plugins Interface), which allows you to make simple picture editings.

It is part of the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and thus open source.
