My Linux story
My first contact with Linux was in the year 2007 during my internship, I started to download the OpenSUSE 10.3 CDs at work, because we had a limited download capacity at home (4GB). Firstly I started to use Gnome, but I had really hard problems with my hardware so went back to Windows (even to Vista!!!). But in the spring of 2008 I saw the first screenshots of KDE4 and I knew that thats the system I want to use (and we also got flat rate at home). So I started to test OpenSUSE 11.0 and it finally worked on the notebook (thanks to the early steps of radeonhd :)). After this great success I used windows only for games and maybe video editing. In September 2008 a friend of mine (STS301) got an ASUS eee and installed Kubuntu, I finally got him to switch to OpenSUSE! Now we are using OpenSUSE as our main operating system, especially for Qt programming.
Programming for Freedom
With my first contacts with Linux I also got interested in the idea of open-source and because I'm also interested in programming, I started some open-source projects mainly written in Qt/C++ (Qt Creator made it possible :))
Because LingoPad was lacking to support Linux and also because Ding is not really attractive in my eyes (I really like well designed GUIs and bombastic effects (thats one of the reasons why I'm using KDE4 :))) I asked the creator of LingoPad (Mario Müller) for an Qt Port, and so we started the project: LingoPad - Origo
There are also some smaller projects I'm working on during my spare time:
- QFastFileShare: a FTP Client, helping you to share your files with friends.
- QKanone: a ballistic simulator, maybe I'll do this for my informatics matura...
- Vertretungen a program for downloading the time table of my school
