Software Freedom Day is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). SFD 2011 is being celebrated on September 17th with with events held around the world

openSUSE at Software Freedom Day

SFD is an excellent opportunity to introduce more people to openSUSE, the world's most powerful and flexible Linux distribution.

If you're organising or attending an event, we want to make it as easy as possible to spread the word about openSUSE. This page attempts to collate all the resources you should need to make your SFD experience a Geeko-filled affair.

PromoDVDs

Normally we would have openSUSE PromoDVDs to give away at events like this.

However openSUSE 11.4 has been so popular we've run out!

Below are some alternatives you can use at your SFD events to introduce more people to our distribution.

SUSE Imaging Appliance

Especially for Software Freedom Day, we have available a special SUSE Studio appliance that can turn any computer into a lean, mean, LiveCD or USB producing machine.

You can get it Here

The appliance includes Live ISOs for openSUSE 11.4 KDE and GNOME

Imagewriter is installed to install the ISOs onto USB drives (see SDB:Live_USB_stick)

With a USB hub, you should be able to run several copies of Imagewriter at once to get more sticks SUSEified at once

Imagewriter will load up automatically when the appliance boots up (it will require the root password, which is linux)

The ISO files are located on the desktop and can be dragged right over onto Imagewriter

Brasero is also installed so the ISOs can be burned to traditional CD/DVD media.

The ISO files can be right clicked and written to disk without needing to load up the full Brasero application.

The Appliance can be run as a LiveDVD, meaning you don't need to make any permanent change to your laptop/computer to turn it into an imaging station.

However, for improved performance it is recommended to download and install the appliance to a hard drive.
