Installation

Pre-installation checklist

  • Drivers installed correctly? See ATI and NVIDIA to set them up.
  • Composite enabled? See Using_Xgl_on_SUSE_Linux and enabling Xgl below or AIGLX. Please note that AIGLX and composite is activated on openSUSE 11.0 Intel graphics and as soon as ATI/NVIDIA drivers are installed so just proceed to openSUSE 11.0 section and Enable Compiz section, AIGLX, Xgl, or Composite are not required to be set up manually.
  • Test if composite is enabled: running grep Composite /var/log/Xorg.0.log as root should show Extension "Composite" is enabled
  • Continue only after the setup mentioned above is working correctly.

openSUSE 11.1

If you would like the latest version(0.8.2) of Compiz, use the 1-click installation from below.

Note: Needs GNOME:2.26 or KDE4.2.x installed.

Enable/Disable Compiz

For GNOME or KDE run Desktop Effects(simple-ccsm) application to enable/disable Compiz.

For those of us who require a recipe, rather than just a hint, this may be of assistance:

  • Click on the OpenSUSE logo on the bottom left of your screen
  • Move your cursor over Applications
  • Click on Utilities
  • Click on Desktop
  • Click on CompizConfig Settings Manager

Enable/Disable XGL

Note: Skip this if you have AIGLX or NVIDIA's newer drivers and see the relevant links below to configure those. This is also not required on openSUSE 11.0 unless there are performance issues with the graphics card.

Image:Shellscript.png Run the following command as root (works for both KDE and GNOME):
xgl-switch --enable-xgl (to enable Xgl and activate Compiz at startup)
xgl-switch --disable-xgl (to disable Xgl and deactivate Compiz)

After that reboot or run as root:

rcxdm restart

Plugins and Decorator Configuration

Use compizconfig-settings-manager(ccsm) or Desktop Effects(simple-ccsm), GUI plugin configuration tools.
