I just got cinnamon working for the new Opensuse Leap 15.1. I noticed three things that were not mentioned that might help someone else trying to get cinnamon working.

The cinnamon packages are available in yast and can be installed using yast. I noticed that the one click installation for Leap 15.1 was not present on the page I found that had detailed information. Even if the one click installation is present I should note that just installing the cinnamon packages will not give you a cinnamon desktop after a reboot or X reboot (control Alt backspace backspace).

I found that going into the yast system configuration (/etc/sysconfig Editor) you can manually change the Display Manager to MDM.

You then need to manually enter cinnamon as the Window Manager in the Window manager option right under the Display Manager option.

I tried several different things, like putting MDM in the display manager and using default in the Window Manager but it came up in gnome when trying that. (I was working from a gnome desktop).

By manually entering both MDM and cinnamon in their respective DM and WM entries you can then do a reboot. My system then loaded the cinnamon desktop.

There was some talk about disabling networking in gnome before changing to cinnamon as cinnamon would fight with the gnome shell for control if you tried enabling cinnamon on the fly. I just avoided that concern by doing a reboot after making and saving the changes in yast.
