OpenSUSE Community

From openSUSE

What is the community and who is a member of it is a subject already often found on the openSUSE mailing-lists. A true answer is difficult to give. Some people think that anybody using openSUSE is a member of the community. Some others think that to be a member it needs some sort of involvement, subscription to a list, registration as wiki editor through the Novell login... In fact, if you think you are a member, want to be a member, ask if you are a member, then you probably are one :-).

Novell employees work on openSUSE both ways, they are paid to work on certain part of openSUSE, SLED and SLES, but many of them are addicts to Linux, passionate Linux advocates, and they do a lot on their own time. Of course they are members.

Community Structure

The openSUSE Guiding Principles describe the goals of the openSUSE project and how it is driven. An openSUSE Board consisting of Novell employees and community members was setup to lead the overall project. openSUSE Members are specifically acknowledged contributors who have brought a continued and substantial contribution to the project (browse member list), who enjoy some perks and will elect the next openSUSE board.

The community is organized into many teams that concentrate on different areas of interest within the distribution or the project in general.

Make sure that you visit the How to Participate page.

Community specific wiki pages

Image:scribus-app.png

Any page author/editor is de facto a community member, so any wiki page is done by the community.

However some pages are more specially aimed to the community interaction.

The Wiki (the thing you are reading now), is available in many languages, and is continually being translated into many more. Visit the Translation Team to help with this significant task.

People of openSUSE

Image:system-users.png

People of openSUSE is a project which aims to make the people behind the openSUSE project and the distribution more visible.

If you for example always wanted to know what a specific contributer motivates to participate or what he thinks about the future of the openSUSE project and of course if he turns off his computer during a thunderstorm as well as a few more non openSUSE related facts - just go on reading the interviews.
