Network Time Protocol information

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a protocol for synchronizing the clocks of computer systems over variable-latency networks. NTP uses UDP on port 123. Additional references on the protocol are listed below.

Configuration

Version 10.2

For Network Manager users:

  • Configure the NTP Client from YaST->Network Services->NTP Configuration
  • Ignore the warning when selecting Automatically start NTP daemon->During Boot - there is no significant delay.
  • Add servers per recommendation at http://www.pool.ntp.org. For example:
server 0.us.pool.ntp.org
server 1.us.pool.ntp.org
server 2.us.pool.ntp.org
  • Ensure NTP is enabled in System->System Services (Runlevel) and then restart the daemon.
