Netbeans IDE

NetBeans is an open-source project dedicated to providing rock solid software development products (such as NetBeans IDE and NetBeans Platform) that address the needs of developers, users and the businesses who rely on NetBeans as a basis for their products. The NetBeans project is also a vibrant community where people from just about any country you can think of, have the ability to ask questions, give advice, make a wide variety of contributions and ultimately share in the success of their products.

In June 2000 NetBeans was made open source by Sun Microsystems, which remains the project sponsor.

The two base products are NetBeans IDE and NetBeans Platform. Both products are free for commercial and noncommercial use. The source code to both is available to anyone to reuse as they see fit within the terms of use. With over 10 million downloads of the NetBeans IDE to date, and over 300,000 developers participating, the netbeans.org project is thriving. Each month visitors from over 130 identifiable countries use and contribute to NetBeans.

Netbeans for openSUSE 11.2

The current version of Netbeans is 6.5. However, the version found in the openSUSE-11.2-Oss repository has a bug that prevents the IDE from finding any import files. There is a patched version found in the openSUSE-Education Repository.

Installing Netbeans

In order to install netbeans you must enable the Education repository. To see if you already have it installed issue the following command as a root user:

  
  zypper lr -u

The first line indicates that the Education repository is installed. If you do not have it installed, issue the following command:

  
zypper addrepo --repo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Education/openSUSE_11.2//Education.repo

Make sure that the Education repository has the same priority as the openSUSE-11.2-Oss repository. You can check that out with the following command.

 
zypper lr -p

which has the following output.

If you do not the correct priority you can set it through yast, on

yast -> Software -> Software Repositories

Now install the package with the command

zypper install netbeans

You are now ready to develop some java code.
