KDE3

Starting with openSUSE 11.2 the KDE3 desktop is no longer an officially supported part of the openSUSE distribution. There is still a possibility to install KDE3 from an unsupported repository KDE:KDE3.

KDE3 status

The openSUSE distribution offered the possibility of installing either the older KDE3 desktop or the newer KDE4 desktop (or both) to ease the transition to the next generation KDE4 desktop. Starting with KDE version 4.3.1 shipped with openSUSE 11.2 it is considered that KDE4 is at least an adequate replacement for KDE3 and for resource reasons KDE3 is not supported.

The openSUSE KDE team is fully busy with integrating and supporting KDE4 and currently does not have the resources to work also on KDE3. KDE3 is practically not developed nor supported by the upstream KDE project and despite not changing anymore it is still a noticeable amount of work to make sure it works with recent versions of related software. It is a decision of the openSUSE KDE team that their resources are better spent working on KDE4 instead of supporting an obsolete version that is being phased out.

If you are interested in (helping) maintaining the KDE3 repository for openSUSE, you are welcome to do so. Contact the KDE team in the #opensuse-kde channel on Freenode or on the opensuse-kde@opensuse.org mailing list.

To install the kde3 desktop on a Opensuse 11.2 system - you should firstly add the repo address as shown below to yast. You will need to install the main kdebase and kdelibs packages - plus any of the package families that you would like (e.g. kdegames, kdegraphics etc). It is possibe to use kde3 packages when running a kde4 desktop and kde4 packages when running a kde3 desktop. So for example the music player programme amarok version 1.4 (designed for kde3 systems) will play fine when running the kde4 desktop and amarok version 2 (designed for kde4) will play fine when running the kde3 desktop.
