Network Time Protocol information
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a protocol for synchronizing the clocks of computer systems over variable-latency networks. NTP uses UDP on port 123. Additional references on the protocol are listed below.
Configuration
Version 10.2
For Network Manager users:
- Configure the NTP Client from YaST->Network Services->NTP Configuration
- Ignore the warning when selecting Automatically start NTP daemon->During Boot - there is no significant delay.
- Add servers per recommendation at http://www.pool.ntp.org. For example:
server 0.us.pool.ntp.org server 1.us.pool.ntp.org server 2.us.pool.ntp.org
- Ensure NTP is enabled in System->System Services (Runlevel) and then restart the daemon.
Version 11.1
Step 1
Open Yast, Network Services, NTP Configuration.
Step 2
Select General Settings tab, click Add.
Step 3
Click Server, Public Server.
Step 4
Select a public server near your physical location, or use the recommendations of http://www.pool.ntp.org. Test the server as required. If the server is unreachable, verify the OpenSuse firewall settings (Step 6) or your ISP's gateway/firewall settings (Step 9).
Step 5
If the host is a client (and not a time server for the domain or network), remove the ibusrt option.
Step 6
Select Security Settings tab, click Open Port in Firewall.
Step 7
Click Firewall Details and select the appropriate interfaces.
Step 8
Verify settings and the server list built in previous steps.
Step 9
Finally, punch a hole in your ISP's gateway/firewall as required. Outgoing, Port 123, UDP.
