| Cademia | Free or Charge | CAD Software | User | Existing software tools for the planning process have severe limitations: They are restricted in openness, they are dependent on the platform, they are complex to use and to program and the users have a limited exertion of influence on the further development.
As a solution, a new platform for geometry-oriented AEC applications has been developed at Bauhaus University Weimar: CADEMIA. While CADEMIA was originally written for teaching and research purposes it is now available as open source software. A long time experience in the development of these systems in the building industry forms the base on which CADEMIA is built. CADEMIA is a modular constructed software and offers lots of possibilities to integrate other functionalities. Due to this flexibility CADEMIA can easily be custom-modeled to fit individual needs. CADEMIA is programmed in JAVA and therefore platform independent. This way it serves as an inexpensive alternative to proprietary CAD software. Features runs on standard hardware no extra software installation necessary, simply start JAR-file easy to use, less complex than existing software easy to program (problem-oriented) many input possibilities • text input • menubar • toolbar • mouse stroke (configure your own freehand symbols) macro management integrated scientific calculator continuous UNDO/REDO (command history) interruptible commands coordinate spaces to avoid numerical problems geometrical / graphical display • flexible window size • graphics selection via mouse click • model display / print layout of projects • digitize: mouse cursor dot, grid, pick extendable views graphical/drawing attributes conforming to standards associative dimensioning/hatching integration of other engineering applications possible e.g. FEM-models … and much more

It has broad FS support, including XFS and unlike dd it stores only used sectors with additional compression availability, producing minimal images. (This is especially valuable to be added in the openSUSE LiveDVDs and the installation ISOs as an additional safety backup/cloning tool). For a how-to look here. |
| cutecom | CuteCom is a graphical serial terminal, like minicom | GPL v2 | easy to use GUI |

| hugin | Easy to use cross-platform GUI for Panorama Tools. | GPL | Photographers | Has been included in 9.x series, but seems to be missing in 10.x.
There are some license issues pending. Will probably come back in future releases. - Henne Please consider including all supporting tools like enblend, autopano-sift and PTStitcher. For instance, go to hugin and scroll down to the Optional Extras section under Linux Binaries. It would be great if you could select 'hugin' from within YaST and have it download all the extra tools too so that no more configuration was necessary. |

| KKBSwitch | KKBSwitch | GPL | Users who want to use at KDE more than two languages layouts with simple ctrl+shift action | Very important tool for usability in KDE.
KKBSwitch is a keyboard layout indicator for KDE 2 or 3. It is useful when you have configured the XKeyboard extension of your X Server to have more than one keyboard group (layout), for example US/ASCII and Russian. KKBSwitch displays an icon in the system tray that indicates which layout is currently active. Note that KKBSwitch does not help you configure XKeyboard, it merely serves as the indicator of the current layout. You still have to configure XKeyboard by editing the XF86Config file. -Proton911 |
| KKeyLed | Watch and control keyboard LED's | GPL | Lmgaup | KKeyled is a KDE panel tray widget which displays the LED states of the keyboard (ie. Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock). | kchmviewer | File Viewing Utility | GPL | Power users | kchmviewer is a chm (MS HTML help file format) viewer written in C++. Unlike most existing CHM viewers for Unix, it uses Trolltech Qt widget library, and could optionally use KDE libraries for better KDE integration. It does not require KDE, but may be compiled with full KDE support, including KDE widgets and KIO/KHTML.
The main advantage of kchmviewer is the best support for non-English languages. Unlike other viewers, kchmviewer in most cases is able to correctly detect the chm file encoding and show it. It correctly shows the index and table of context in Russian, Korean, Chinese and Japanese help files, and with new search engine is able to search in any chm file no matter what language it is written. kchmviewer is written by George Yunaev (see the contacts page for details), and is licensed under GNU GPL license. It uses chmlib, and some ideas and code from xchm. - |

| KArchiver for KDE | KArchiver is just like what WinRAR is for Win32 (supporting more than 12 archive formats like tar.gz, tar.bz2, zip, rar, 7z...) | GNU GPL | Users | Biggest dissappointments with KArk is its level of customization, less archieve formats support, lacks in creating password protected archieves and choosing level of compression. KArchiever for *NIX is what WinRAR is for Win32 even more. It has more than 12 archieve format support, highly customizable, automatic installer for source tar balls, nice GUI, gets tightly integrated with Konquerer and KDE, supports creation of sfx archieves, drag & drop file add/update and for the GEEKS theres also command line support! Say Goodbye to KArk! |

| ttysnoop | TTY session duplicator/multiplexer. | GPL | amins, programmers, support, training, users, (in other words, everyone, but mostly only on boxes with real interactive login users that run applications, not web & db servers), Aljex | As a sys admin and developer and support giver and consultant, I used to use the commercial product DoubleVision on almost every box. But DoubleVision is almost impossible to use on linux because it is to narrowly tied to specific builds of specific kernels. ttysnoop doesn't do a tenth of what dv does, but it does do the most important part, which is allow a customer support person to connect to a users tty and train them or fix their problem, or see a problem first hand to vet it and document it. Currently I get by using alien to install a Deb package or by installing a Fedora rpm. Note: it does work with ssh not just telnet/serial. It can not work with FacetWin however since facetwin does not use a seperate login program. That is one major difference from DoubleVision. DV uses a kernel module and hooks in where it doesn't matter how a tty got created. ttysnoop is all userspace and merely replaces or wraps around /bin/login. |
| Turck MMCache | MMCache can give a huge speedup of php application since it can cache php objects between multiple php script calls | GPL | PHP Users |

| xbindkeys | Configuring hotkeys for user defined programs. | GPL | Users, mainly of WindowMaker like window manager which does not support hotkeys for user defined applications by default. | I tried many and find this to be robust and easy to use tool. This is not specific for Windowmaker but like any other app, can be made so by creating a dock icon for it. It is part of FSF directory and is already part of the following distributions: Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Gentoo, slackware, altlinux, Linspire, freebsd, openbsd ... as can be seen from google search. |

| Xfe | X File Explorer (Xfe) is an MS-Explorer like file manager for X | GPL | Users with older hardware | For light desktop users or those with an older system, resource hogging file managers just aren't the way to go, Xfe is small, very fast and only requires the FOX library to be fully functional. Please test the xfe-package from the build service repository: [Project X11:Fox] if everything works as expected, this package can be included in the main distribution. |

| xpad | Postit notes application. | GPL | Users, mainly of WindowMaker. | Some Window managers do not have notes application by default. There are not many stable/easily compilable postit notes apps especially on windowmaker for SuSE10. I find this to be very cool, configurable, very user friendly and of course stable. This is not specific for Windowmaker but like any other app, can be made so by creating a dock icon for it. Can be easily configured with builtin hotkeys + with external hotkey programs. The program is also fault tolerant. All information is kept on the hard drive, not in memory. |
| XeTeX | TeX engine simlar to PDFTeX | GPL | TeX users (i.e. in science, publishing, engineering) | Similar to PDFTeX, better Unicode/OpenFont support, see ConTeXt Wiki for a description. |

| xxdiff | graphical file and directories comparator and merge tool | GPL | developers | xxdiff can compare 3 files at once. KDE's (3.5.2) kompare might be considered as alternative but its functionality doesn't even come close (f.e. kompare's lack of a search feature precludes serious use). |
