First check if your webcam is on the list of supported webcams.

If this is the case then do as follows:

Under openSUSE 10.3 & 11.0, you can use 1-Click Install:

If using openSUSE 10.2, add the following repository to YaST (YaST -> Software Repositories):

Version:
10.2
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/drivers:/webcam/openSUSE_10.2_Update_standard/

Then open YaST -> Software Management

In the Search window enter "spca".

If your kernel-version is below 2.6.11 (SUSE Linux 10.1 or earlier), select package "spca5xx-kmp-default". If your kernel-version is 2.6.11 or newer (openSUSE 10.2), select package "gspcav1-kmp-default".

Check your kernel-version in a console by typing "uname -a".

Search and install package jasper- An Implementation of the JPEG-2000 Standard.

Plugin your webcam and start Kopete, a video chat client. In Kopete go to Settings -> Configure -> Devices and check if your webcam is working.

After a kernel update you may need to update the webcam driver as well.

If your webcam still doesn't work

If your webcam is not supported by this driver, then check if it's supported here: If this is the case then do as follows:

Add the following repository to YaST -> Software Repositories (for openSUSE 10.2 only): {VersionNote|10.2|http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/drivers:/webcam/openSUSE_10.2_Update_standard/}

Start YaST -> Software Management

In the Search window enter "uvc". Select uvcvideo-kmp-default(or the one for your kernel flavor) and install it.

Plug in the webcam and start Kopete again. In Kopete go back to Settings -> Configure -> Devices and check if your webcam is working.

After a kernel update you need to update this webcam driver as well.

The Phillips SPC900NC works out of the box with openSUSE 10.2, and amsn directly recognizes the camera. Only an upgrade to amsn 0.97RC1 is mandatory, due to some bugs in the previous version. Also port 6890-6901 needs to be opened.

SPC900NC

If you own a webcam with SONIX SN9C20x bridge (device IDs 0c45:62xx)

Visit Microdia Google-Group.

This driver is currently in early development stage, but it still supports devices 6242, 624e, 624f, 6260, 6270, 627b.

You can download the latest driver version from the git-repository with

"git-clone http://repo.or.cz/r/microdia.git"
