From openSUSE

Hello :-)

I see you make several pages on virtual machines.

I use VMware mainly for two things: test the new SUSE beta and teaching SUSE administration.

With VMware this if fairly simple, but also fairly slow.

So I would like to see in the virtualization pages, probably at the very beginning of the page, some clues of the usefullness of the Virtual software.

This is not even clear from the maker's web site :-)

that is:

  • is the virtual machine completely equivallent from the user point of view with a true hardware, specially related to peripherals.
  • Is it possible to have a virtual machine isolated as an ordinary application or does this install needs to change the main host install (if you have a special kernel, for example, how can you make security fixes?)
  • what are the link between host and virtual machines (independance, copy/paste capability)

for example:

  • VMware gives to the peripherals an acces nearly similar to the hardawre one, but with virtual devices independant from the real ones (for teaching, this is very good, as the teacher have the same device as the student, but for speed it's probably bad)
  • At first glance openVM needs you to run your usual system as a virtual machine (at least I undestand it from the web site)

I don't know if you can explain that, but if you can, it could be good

thanks

Sbearnso,

I would like to thank you for your efforts to enrich opensuse.org.

Please include category in future articles, like

[[Category:Virtualization]]

or

[[Category:XEN]]

wich can be included in Category:Virtualization as subcategory.

Categories and subcategories are automatic way to index wiki articles.

In that way you may not need to put index at the and of each page, but just to refer to category like

[[:Category:XEN and Virtualization]]

wich will show up on the page as Category:XEN and Virtualization

Or as named link

[[:Category:XEN and Virtualization | XEN and Virtualization]]

which will be visible as XEN and Virtualization

If you have suggestions please leave message on my discussion page.

Thanks

Rajko.
