From openSUSE

Geeko Welcome to Nick Koch's corner on openSUSE's wiki. I am pleased to say that openSUSE is the best OS out there and will always use it as my daily platform. This page covers a little bit about me and my projects. Additionally, my contributions to the SUSE community will be listed here. Note: Please do not edit this page. Bio

Nick Koch was born in 1981 in Maryland, USA. During his child hood, Nick was introduced to an x8088 which laid the ground work for his future in computers. Shortly thereafter, he was given an x8086 in which he started learning DOS. Throughout the '90s he tested various operating systems on his IBM model P/S 95 486 with micro channel technology.

It wasn't until the early Pentiums that he started using Linux.

Today Nick is involved in two significant projects in the WINE community, The Bordeaux Technology Group and Wine Reviews.

Projects

Here are the projects I am currently involved in.

Bordeaux

The Bordeaux Technology Group is a software services and development company specializing in Windows compatibility software. Users of Linux systems from time to time find themselves in the need to run specialized Windows software. The Bordeaux suite enables access to these programs and data in a seamless and low cost manner without requiring licensing of Microsoft Technology.

The Bordeaux Group also provides migration services and support for alternative operating systems specializing in Windows compatibility. There is a multitude of software developed only for the Windows operating system and even when software vendors port thier applications to another platform, generally it lacks features that the Windows version contains. The only solution these developers face is to have access to both systems for testing which leads to increased infrastructure demands, and wasted project resources. If you are a vendor interested in supporting your application on Linux or a software user that needs to run a Windows application on Linux, we can help.

Examples of target applications that the Bordeaux suite supports Out of the Box:

  • Microsoft Office Suite of Applications. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Internet Explorer. Web Developers frequently need to run multiple versions of Internet Explorer to compare how a website will look to all users running different revisions of the browser software
  • Consumer Video Games. In many cases these contain copy-protection systems that are impossible to port to another platform. This makes vendors reluctant to invest the capital in acquiring another system that will work on other platforms
  • Adobe Photoshop CS and CS2
  • Custom applications for which replacement is not available or development/purchase of a replacement is not economically feasible when compared to the cost of maintaining the existing application in a legacy emulation environment

Wine-Reviews.net

Wine Reviews is a big contributor to the WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator) community providing howtos on how to get Windows software working with Wine. We post news updates on each individual project. We have in the past done some beta testing for CodeWeavers and of course we now do support for Bordeaux. However our primary goal is to be a Wine news portal.

Wine (WINE Is Not an Emulator)

Currently I test applications in the application database and write howtos and reviews on www.wine-reviews.net.

CodeWeavers

I still do beta testing of software released by CodeWeavers, CrossOver Games, Mac and Office suites.
