Situation
You want to enable the 3D destop effects on your system.
Procedure
| Before you start, make sure you have 3D acceleration enabled. There are different ways to do it, please look at these articles for more information Intel 3D, Nvidia, ATI. |
All needed programs for the 3D desktop are in the default installation, if you made a custom one please use YaST2 to install the package compiz.
To enable the 3D desktop you have to open a terminal (like konsole in KDE or gterm in GNOME) and login as user root:
su - <enter the root password> gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl SuSEconfig
You now have to restart the desktop system with CTRL ALT BACKSPACE (backspace is the key above the return/enter key with the arrow to the left), or reboot the system.

disable the 3D desktop
To disable the 3D desktop you have to open a terminal and login as user root again:
su - <enter the root password> gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl SuSEconfig
and restart the desktop again.
