openSUSE 10.3 on an Apple iMac
This article is WIP; backup your data before trying this installation! See Installation on MacBook for more information.
iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.1.
- To make space for openSUSE shrink the Mac partition using the "Disk Utility" coming with Mac OS:
- In Finder click "Applications" -> "Disk Utility".
- Click the whole disk in the left pane, then "Partition" label in the dialog frame.
- Drag the volume ("Macintosh HD") to shrink it and click "Apply".
- Install rEFIt as a Bootmanager
- In Mac OS X download the rEFIt disk image file (.dmg) from http://refit.sourceforge.net/
- Install rEFIt as described at http://refit.sourceforge.net/
- Shut down and restart. From the rEFIt screen select "Start Partitioning Tool" and update (sync) the MBR partition table if needed.
- Boot into Mac OS X.
- Start openSUSE Installation
- Insert the openSUSE DVD or CD-ROM installation medium and shut down and restart the iMac.
- In rEFIt after restarting you should now see the Tux penguin symbolizing the openSUSE installation medium. Select the openSUSE installation medium and boot for the installation.
- openSUSE Installation
- Proceed with the installation as described in the manual (language and timezone, software selection, etc.). The installation work-flow is very similar to the work-flow on other hardware; here we just describe the differences.
- You must change the partitioning. ... Keep GPT partition table if YaST wants you to change it.
- Location of the Bootloader
- This is very important! The bootloader must NOT be installed in the MBR. Install it in the Linux partition (e.g., /dev/sda4)! To be sure check the "Expert" tab in the Installation Overview dialog in the Bootloader section for correct settings.
