SpeakOut as part of the openSUSE project aims to collect useful informations on how to help the openSUSE project and the openSUSE distribution to be more widely know among people, no matter whether they are gurus or newbies. The main goal is have people doing marketing, organizing local meetings, and giving user support at their hometowns and countries.

Why

Linux has been used on a large scale on desktops and laptops as well as at companies and at home for the past years. Linux, represented by many Linux distributions, still is an unknown operative system for some and for others "not suitable for their needs", they claim. For both, openSUSE has been trying to change that minds showing people how beautiful and reliable the open source world is, and how everything fits together.

openSUSE is one of the most widely used Linux distributions nowadays. However it needs community to stand be a solid, fast, usable, secure, and a competitive distribution. Without all these components plus some others a Linux distribution doesn't have a future and can't go forward anymore. openSUSE always followed this policy since the beginning, proving that it suits all kind of users. Although, and because openSUSE doesn't want to stop the upward direction that always used its fellows to, we now need your collaboration - it doesn't hurt, it doesn't take too much time, and you don't need to have any prior knowledge of programming or whatever you may be thinking of.

Well, less talk more work please!

Tasks

Marketing

Make an openSUSE booth at a tech event, such as at an open source event. Lan parties are also good places to promote openSUSE around the young boys.

Booth

Booths are generally settled on events to promote certain project, and it's quite easy to do one.

Material

Depending on how big the event is, you will need at least this stuff:

  • Desktops and/or laptops - impress people with demos; it's also recommended have installed the latest openSUSE version as is also recommend having them freely available - attendees love to put their hands on them to try openSUSE right away!
  • Electricity - you will need it if you have desktops/laptops
  • Internet - via Ethernet or wireless. If possible, use both because it might be useful if you want to show how well openSUSE supports them.
  • Tables
  • T-shirts, pins, promo DVDs, and caps
  • Posters - everywhere!

Now that you have the necessary stuff you are ready to have a lot of success, and fun!
