About me

A lot of people tell me that I’m one-of-a-kind. Some say it’s because I look wierd. Some say it’s my personality. I like to think it’s because I’m only twenty one but I’m already doing what I love. I love connecting things - connecting people with new concepts, existing concepts in new and exciting combinations, or friends who have never met.

That’s why I enjoy technical writing so much - it’s all about connecting the potential audience with the process in a way they can understand, translating and arranging the content so the lightbulb turns on over their head and they can put their new product or process to work. Nothing excites me more than watching someone reach that “Eureka!” moment.

At the moment I am a full-time student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with one year to finish in my Bachelor’s Degree in Professional and Technical Writing. I also work part-time for a snow plow service company, writing documentation for their salt spreading products. In the future, I hope to write documents a for a company heavily vested in open-source software, such as IBM, Sun Microsystems, or Novell, but until then, I write open-source documentation on my own, chronicled at http://www.andrewd18.com/guidetolinux/.

I'm also part of the openSUSE Forum Team, where I serve the openSUSE community as a forum administrator.

When I’m not writing documentation for something or working on the forum, I’m over at my friends’ places playing tabletop and board games such as Warhammer, Settlers of Catan, and Axis and Allies. I also enjoy being creative in group role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or Shadowrun. When I have the time, I read - my favorite series so far is Frank Herbert’s Dune.
