About

opensuse-updater is an update notifier applet for openSUSE. It's included in openSUSE since 10.2, and it's installed by default. It was originally developed by Narayan Newton under the Google Summer of Code 2006, but is now maintained by official SUSE people.

The KDE applet evolved from a Zenworks client into a native ZYpp client thanks to the inclusion of zypp-checkpatches in the zypper package. This allows the applet to be very lightweight and simple.

Thanks to this simplicity, a GNOME applet is now available too.

You can see how the applets talk to ZYpp checkpatches tool in the updates status specification

Development

Development is hosted in openSUSE subversion's repository.

Applet-Icons

The issue of the applet's icons is now solved by using the icons named in the freedesktop.org's icon specification plus our gecko for the "everything is fine, there are no updates" state which is not defined by fd.o's spec.

Both applets use those icons.
