Updating openSUSE

From openSUSE

(Redirected from Update SUSE to next version)

Warning

Performing distribution upgrades in the running system is unsupported and may result in breakage. For a supported way requiring only one mini CD, see INSTALL@Network.

That said, let’s look at how you can update your system without burning another five CDs.

Preparing YaST

Open YaST and do the following:

Software -> Installation Source > Add > FTP

If you find the FTP source does not work properly, do the following:

Software -> Installation Source > Add > HTTP

The files are the same, and this method may be more reliable.

In the resulting window, under "Server Name" enter the following:

 download.opensuse.org

Enter the following for "Directory on Server":

 distribution/openSUSE-stable/repo/oss/
              or
 distribution/10.3/repo/oss/

(The first stays constant through each new release, so you need never change this.)

If this server is unresponsive for you, please go to the development mirrors page and choose another one.

Getting the upgrades

Go back to YaST’s Software section, and select "Software Management" (it will take a while to load this as it needs to refresh the packages available from the server).

What this should look like

As you can see, we changed the Filter option to ‘Package Groups’ at the top left of this screen, and selected the "zzz All" group. Then we right-clicked on any package on the right and selected "Update if newer version available" from the "All in this list" menu.

Now simply click ‘Accept’ to begin the update.

Once this is complete, click ‘Finish’ and observe immediately any notices you may have seen (especially for kernel upgrades, which require you to reboot to take effect).
