Updating Development Versions (Betas or RCs)

Using this to update beta3 -> beta 4 I had curious things: not all was updated. I just do this again and have still 1.4 Gb to update. I do and will report. In fact yast freezed. I redo this upgrading by package groups in place of all and all seems to go well, but RC1 is coming and I stop upgrading beta3 :-) jdd

Updating devel versions is inherently unsupported. Most of the time, it works, though. Do not waste your time reporting those bugs, they are "invalid". Instead please test, whether an update from a released product to an RC works; if such an update fails, report it as a bug. --Keichwa 00:45, 9 Oct 2005 (MDT)

Not userfriendly at all

I don't get it. After years of development SuSE is still not userfriendly for upgrading major versions. Big warnings: unsupported, may result in system inconsistencies, increases the risk of causing damage. I can hardly call it a personal version when users are forced to upgrade/update the dangerous way or the hard way (fresh install). This kind of userfriendly support keeps normal home users from using Linux, not to mention an open door for security problems caused by users not updating their system over this.

With the advent of SUSE Linux OSS and the openSUSE Project it is not that easy to get all things right. Updating SUSE Linux (the boxed product) is supported since ever and probably will always be. Updating SUSE Linux OSS (SL OSS) to SUSE Linux OSS will probably work as well, but SUSE Linux (the company) does make any claims concerning this scenario; it is up to the openSUSE community to check this out, I guess. Remember, thus far there is only SL OSS 10.0 - the next SL OSS release it scheduled for the next year!
Of course, it is strongly recommended to update any SL 10.0 RC (release candidate) to the final product (either SL or SL OSS) and then run the usual update (YOU) for system security, as you are pointing out. Feel free to improve the article accordingly. --Keichwa 00:39, 9 Oct 2005 (MDT)

ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)

I've tried to follow the instructions for update to 10.0, but get the above message when I try connecting to the ftp server. Help please! Anyone?

Check if you have the correct URL for the installation source. It very likely is the wrong one or the server is down. -Msmeissn

Adding a part which explains steps needed to acquire fresh updates

How is a user supposed to know that they need to add new respository sources? When they first decide to upgrade their PC, they are going to go to YAST and find it empty, because the instructions here "assume" that the user has already added sources to YAST. This assumption is unwarranted. Should this page be changed?
