Talk:Redesign of GNOME main menu and application browser

From openSUSE

I really think there are still some things that this menu needs. For example, the search box is only a link to beagle, instead it should be search as you type with the results replacing the applications in the menu, just like the openSUSE KDE menu. Also it would be better to make the Applications, Documents, and Places tabs, or something that you can use the mouse scroll to switch.

Very cluttered

Every mockup of an integreated main menu is way too cluttered. What is wrong with the application browser? The easiest and best long-term option is to change the app browser:

1. Make it faster. Once a user clicks on More Applications, it should be instantly that the app browser pops up.

2. Make search more prominent. Maybe put it at the top, or make it bold type, somehow make it stand out to the users more. This is how users are better off filtering through the packages.

3. Reorganize the catagories. Put the most used at the top (Internet, Office, etc.) and the less used at the bottom (Games, Utilities, etc.)

4. Make it less cluttered. Don't put links to apps that can be found in the control center, or nautilus, etc. Clean up System and Utilies and merge them into one category at the bottom of the list.

That should solve most of the problems without making our menu look like a cluttered mess.

Also, the Prefrences windows are way too cluttered, and have way too many options that no user should need to touch.

(BTW, should these ideas be moved to the wiki page?)

Attempt at un-cluttering

new mockup

Would you think this leaner mockup is better? I think the applications|documents|system-buttons should be replaced by a dropdown-menu; the menu should have sub-categories (like 'word processors' in this mockup) as they are used in the ASUS-Launcher of the Eee-PC, which lets you navigate really quickly. The menu should auto-scroll up- and downwards when the cursor is near top or bottom.
