Talk:OpenSUSE 11.0

From openSUSE

Why should I upgrade from 10.3 to 11.0?

Hi there,

I'm a loyal SUSE user since 6.x times and I'm web developer developing applications mainly in JavaScript using ExtJS JavaScript Library.

I've been testing openSUSE 11.0 from beta stages up to the current RC1; I suppose nothing dramatic changes in release version.

The question is: Why should I upgrade? I've found the following so far:

  • KDE 4.0 is not for production use. Basic widgets I've been using are missing, e.g. System Monitor, KNemo, Konch.
  • XGL: fusion-icon is not in distribution. Has it been dropped? Is there any similar icon/widget for same purpose?
  • I'm on HP Compaq 8710w and my memory card reader didn't work on 10.3 so I hoped it will on 11.0, but it doesn't.
  • My fingerprint reader is still not supported.
  • Skype, one of my main communication tools, refuses to install.
  • Most important: There is no option to install Firefox 2.x. Firefox 3.x + Firebug 1.1 is not yet suitable for real work.

Don't take me wrong please, I love openSUSE for many years and I'm not going to advocate against it. I just want to have openSUSE as a production tool and not for playing with resizable icons in KDE 4.
