Talk:LTSP

From openSUSE

The LTSP page "How to install KIWI-LTSP from Scratch" needs some work. Listen up Geeks, when you say set up your PC as a "Gateway," well, "How"? Ok, the second nic is installed. I can give it an IP of 192.168.0.254. I can also set up the repositories. As DHCP server, which network card is set up? Is it the one connnecting to the Internet or the one connecting to the 3Com hub? Ok I figured the one going to the hub. What about the next two pages of needed data like domain name, primare name server ip secondary server ip, default gateway, etc. These pages need to be done with a goal in mind. That goal is to start with on section, explain it, set it, and continue with the next section. Any takers on a step by step setup using 10.2?

I've two schools running LTSP from openSUSE 10.0 on. Currently one school is using LTSP 4.2 with openSUSE 10.2 and FreeNX for connections from outsite. The terminalserver is installed via AutoYaST over the Open School Server (OSS).

Extis has added a "ready to use" AutoYaST profile for the terminalserver together with the OSS.

So all one has to do is:

  • download the Open School Server 2.1 ISO (yes, it's free and based on a SLES9)
  • install the OSS (which is as easy as a SLES installation) - a Quickstart is available here
  • copy an openSUSE (or SLED) installation DVD into a special directory (follow the instructions of the old SuSE Linux School Server manual, chapter 6: "Autoinstallation and Network Booting" - just exchange the path names in the following way:
    • /var/SuSE/akt => /srv/tftp/akt/CD1
  • copy the kernel and initrd from this DVD into another directory
    • exchange /srv/tftpboot with /srv/tftp/
  • boot the Clients via PXE or via the Boot-CD
  • and choose which "profile" to install
  • go away, drink a cup of coffee (or two)
  • come back and login

Thats all I have to do with "normal" hardware. My clients boot over PXE and use the PXE boot image delivered with the OSS. The X-Client of the terminalserver allows remote connections per default, when installed via autoyast. All Clients can boot via PXE and the dhcp-server running on the OSS is configured to deliver the PXE boot image to them and tell them to connect a terminalserver named "terminalserver".

If you have further questions, feel free to ask me directly.

Recent changes to these KIWI-LTSP instructions?

Hello, After installing the install sources, I notice that "kiwi-desc-ltsp" and "kiwi-desc-netboot" were not available. However there is an improvement in the KIWI file "structure" ie images in "/usr/share/kiwi/image/netboot/". Is it possible to update this install wiki to show us "newbies" how it goes now with references as to where the pxe boot image etc should be placed so that everything works as it should. Many thanks, Greg

PS...@ Cyberorg...I'm using your compiz-fusion packages on my laptop with great success, and the transition from Beryl is moving along nicely! This is very stable vs Beryl for me. Great work!!
