Analysis of the feature gap between kpowersave and powerdevil (rabauke)

I tested PowerDevil 1.3

Minus:

  • lacks per profile "disable notifications"
  • lacks screensaver settings
  • lacks "acoustic" scheme
  • not loaded during boot, i.e. kdm does not trigger it, hence there is not powersaving/suspending if no user is logged in. (kpowersave also has this problem on 11.1)
  • has some usability issues, i.e. tells the user that it cannot display the kcm_module because powersaved is running, yet does not offer to kill it.
  • kded daemon is not started after installation, the user has to re-login. The kcm_module should have a button "start powerdevil daemon" in that case.
  • The kcm-module might not be shown in systemsettings without re-login.
  • Works with battery plasmoid for system tray - this would have to be backported to 4.1 for openSUSE 11.1.

Added in 1.3:

  • general shortcuts-settings, i.e. what happens if the users presses the suspend-button on the keyboard is set per profile
  • "presentation" scheme

Plus:

  • has some nice new features, such as "disable kwin effects" as part of the schemes, schemes per battery level, e.g. extreme powersaving if the battery is below 12%, "execute script xy" and "turn off CPU x".

To sum up, I do not think it is worth putting any effort into porting kpowersave, if it was not even started yet. Rather add/fork powerdevil.
