Talk:Easier way to switch between network config
From openSUSE
Ideally the user should not have to take any action when the laptop is brought to another network. Whether it is wired or wireless, it should automatically recognize the network as "familiar" or, in a new network, inform the user that a new network is found.
First, we need a simple way to recognize the current network. Like are we at home, at the office, at a customer, in a new network, etc. Then (if this particular network needs any specific settings) just load the required network configuration from a file.
What are the things a computer can look for when it wants to know if a network is familiar?
Perhaps network name ? And a confirmation should be ask to user : "XXX network detected : do you want to use XXX network settings ?".
But this is a more sophisticate feature (for 10.1 ?), an easier one for 10.0 could be an option to save/load these settings.

isn't DHCP made for that? jdd
I don't think so. DHCP couldn't save settings like WEP keys, network name, routes... F-perret 08:05, 24 Aug 2005 (MDT)
