Talk:Compiling software
From openSUSE
Just noticed that checkinstall is mentioned in two places. The article seems to need some reorganization.
Possible reorganization:
* 1 Background
o 1.1 A Caution
o 1.2 Prerequisites
* 2 Compiling
* 3 Troubleshooting
* 4 Summary
* 5 Places to look for software
* 6 Additional information
Instead of:
* 1 Compiling for beginners
o 1.1 Try to avoid compiling :-)
o 1.2 What do you need to compile?
o 1.3 Compiling
* 2 What if things go wrong
* 3 Summary
* 4 Places to look for software
* 5 Additional information
Comments anyone?
The plan seems to be good. What is your opinion about:
* 3 Troubleshooting
instead of
* 3 Dealing with Problems
Although I like your proposal, Troubleshooting was used in a few popular articles and users are probably familiar what will be included in that section. --Rajko M 19:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
I followed the proposal and made the change of Dealing with Problems to Troubleshooting. I also changed Warning to A Caution as it seemed more appropriate. I am however very new to actually contributing to articles so I seem to have done a bit more rewriting to accommodate the organizational changes than I intended. I did remember that changes are easily rolled back, so I made all of them at once so they could be reverted quickly if necessary. Unfortunately, this seems to have fuzzed up the diff shown on the history page and it shows greater changes than I actually made.
For future reference, should I have posted the proposed reorganization/rewrite here before I actually changed the article itself? (also, how do you add that time tag?)
There is no real need to announce changes. I've seen them as article was in need of attention, but there is only 24 hours in a day :-)
The time stamp is a part of signature, which will be inserted instead of ~~~~. If you enable java for this site, and check in "preferences" than it can be available in a set of buttons above edit window. The regular is 4x~ (tilda), but you can play with to see what comes out of 3 and 5 of them. -- Rajko M 04:42, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. It looks like I have finally found a way to give something back since that fateful day I discovered linux on the desktop in 9.3. MyNameIsIshmael 08:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
