Using YaST to install Pacman's Audacity rpm on SL10.0 causes a dependency error for libmad.so. Any guesses?--Reverend Ted 13:21, 15 Dec 2005 (MST)

- I remember I had problems when I installed audacity (bcoz of libmad). I think this problem is specific to x86_64. - Nilesh Bansal Dec 16 2005
Trying to Install Audacity on Suse Linux 10 i386. CD installation.
I suspect that not all Suse 10 distributions have the same files. I tried to install Audacity using the instuctions on open suse.
YaSt found wxGTK and wxGTK-compat in my system and installed them whithout a problem. YaST could not find wxGTK-devel. I could not find it at packman either. I eventually found it at pbone.net, but this for Fedora 4. YaST found 4 more files were required and none of these was on my system. Nor could I find any of these in packman.
I could not find wxGTK-common or wxGTK2 in packman (I tried several packman sites) I found them both for Fedora 4 on pbone.net. YaST was able to install both as locked files. Locked, because they did not have a SuSE signature.
I could not find a standard i386 version of audacity on packman. So I downloaded, from packman, the only rpm I could find. This was audacity-1.3.0-0.1-1.pm.i586.rpm A Beta version.
Yast reported that libmad.so.0 was required so I cancelled the audacity install. I google checked for libmad.so.0 Found that libmad.so.0 required about 4 files none of which YaST could find in my system.
So I have decided that my SuSE 10 does not support audacity despite audacity being listed as its only audio editor and the inclusion of instuctions for its use.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I need a different SuSE 10 to run audacity? Should I try installation from source?
Audacity/Suse10.0( 32&64)-wxGTK~ 2.4 versions needed
This is a post I am generally sending out in hope, and I think explains why I suspect Suse 10.0 in practice can not run Audacity. I hope to be corrected.
Hi everyone
Running Suse 10.0 ( 32 and 64 ) I am trying to make Audacity work.
Apparently Audacity needs version 2.4 of wxGTK-common and wxGTK2. In addition, it might also need version 2.4 of wxGTK and wxGTK-compat and wxGTK-devel, but I am not sure about this.
I can not find packages for Suse 10.0 in this version to download anywhere.
I would be very grateful if anyone knows where these packages can be found. I have spent a long time searching, but I do make silly mistakes. ( Making xine work was, in comparison, easy. )
If these packages can not be found, I think this might mean that Suse 10.0 is in practice not capable of Audio Editing, and that I will have to try another Distro for this function. I have become attached to Suse and would be reluctant to abandon it – perhaps I could run two Distros if need be.
Any help will be gratefully received. I am a computer newbie – no prior windows experience!
IMPORTANT UPDATE - I have not made Audacity work yet running Suse 10.0, however I have just installed Suse 10.1_32 and Audacity works " right out of the box " - no need to search for packages, no dependencies to resolve. I suspect someone at Suse has made a special effort.
