Talk:Application Equivalents
From openSUSE
The biggest problem with lists like this is the lack of information on how well the equivalent programs replicate functionality and ease of use. Scribus, for instance, has a very steep learning curve. Whether the average user can climb it, or not, is unclear to me. I fear many newbies may assume there is no problem, and give up when they hit the many walls hidden in this maze. --LGLisle 23:45, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- You are right. HCL has the same problem. Limited space in table doesn't give chance to write thoroughly. I'm thinking about the way to add the link to more detailed description. Simple link to the same page has problem with limited capacity of single wiki page. For instance Howto setup SUSE 10.1 as Samba PDC comes with this: WARNING: This page is 36 kilobytes long; some browsers may have problems editing pages approaching or longer than 32kb. Please consider breaking the page into smaller sections. So it is good to keep pages smaller, and that means some other kind of linking. What do you think? --Rajko M 00:16, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Agreed
Maybe stick to 3 columns per table: Windows Apps, SuSE Linux Apps, Migration Info.
This would greatly help the lisibility of the page. For each Windows application provide the name of the replacement available in SuSe. The Migration info should be very short or simply a link to another page explaining in details how to migrate from windows to Suse (import issues, user experience, supported format, installation process when not directly available from the Suse distro).
Just my 2c.
Cheers, Beru
PS: in the meantime I'm trying to cleanup the page while keeping the information unchanged.
- The cleanup looks good Beru. Maybe we should have one equivalent per raw, and use Linux application name as a link to page that will give an application overview. That overviews we will have sooner or later, so one section in overview called, for instance, Cross Reference can contain tips for people that have experience with applications that offer similar functionality including those in other operating systems. This way we would have place for any cross reference, for any migration, not only one. Additional benefit will be introduction of Linux application before any migration tips. Present reference table can be kept as index with minimum additional information. --Rajko M 03:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
