Supported PowerPC hardware
From openSUSE
We will provide a list of hardware which should run. Please feel free to add machines, once you were able to install and do some basic usage on such a machine.
A default installation with KDE or GNOME will require at least 2.5GB disk space.
The usage will be painful with less than 256MB RAM. With 128MB or less, the installation will already be painful...
Does run:
Genesi
- Open Desktop Workstation (G4, 1GHz, based on Pegasos II)
- Pegasos II board (G4, 1GHz)
- EFIKA 5200B (G2, 400Mhz) No installation support yet. Please check here for details, how to get openSUSE running.
Desktop Mac:
- G5
- G4
- G3
- Pre-G3 Macs - 72/73/76/85/86/95/9600's (G3 or G4 Upgrade HIGHLY Recommended)
- 54/55/64/6500, 6360 & 6300/160 - Max RAM of 128/136MB(Depending on Model) - Not Recommended for KDE or GNOME even with a G3 Upgrade
- 604, 603, & 601's are supported but they will be really too slow for a modern desktop like KDE or GNOME.
Mobile Mac:
- PowerBook G4
- PowerBook G3
- 2400, 3400 & Kanga/3500 - Not Recommended due to low RAM Limit
- iBook G4
- iBook G3
...
IBM RS/6000:
- all CHRP and PReP systems
Note: 10.1 has no PReP support as it was temporary dropped from the kernel.org kernel.
IBM pSeries:
- all
(models with RS64 cpu, like p620, p660, F80 require SuSE Linux 10.1)
IBM iSeries:
- all
(as far as they are claimed to run linux here: IBM iSeries hardware list)
Well, not really. hwinfo does not recognize the virtual disks anymore, so YaST will not find them. (related bugzilla report). Installing onto a native SCSI disk connected to an IPR controller will work.
Sony PLaystation:
- PS3
Does not run:
- Mac with Nubus
