  • Installation Source is any medium that contains one or more installable Software Packages.

  • Package a collection of (related) files, the usual way to represent software on a Linux system
  • Patch a description of a change, usually to fix a bug
  • Pattern a collection of (related) packages, used to represent a specific functionality of the openSUSE system
  • Plain text is term describing text files that except characters that can be seen on the screen contain minimum formating characters like new line and tab

  • Software Repository is collection of Software Packages.
  • Software Package is bundle of software, documentation and configuration instructions packaged in single file (rpm, deb, tar.gz, etc).

  • ZENworks Linux Management (ZLM) uses the following terminology
    • service A functionality provided by the ZLM server, a typical service is package related
    • bundle A group of packages, treated as a single entity
    • repository This is on the backend 6.x or 7.x service and it is the location where all the packages are stored. The contents are never directly represented to the user - the end user view is only via package assignment or via catalog assignment.
    • catalog This is the end-user representation of packages based on groupings determined by the administrator. These groupings are simply created by identifying a catalog and adding the packages that you want to be available in that catalog - ie Multimedia would have mplayer and the codecs.
