SDB:Internal Modems with Conexant Chipsets (HSF/HCF) from SUSE LINUX 9.1 on
From openSUSE
Version: 9.1 -
[edit]
Symptom
Your attempt to use an internal modem equipped with a Conexant chipset (often represented by the abbreviation HCF, HSF, or HSFi) with SUSE LINUX 9.1 or newer fails.
[edit]
Cause
The driver required by this modem is no longer freely available. Henceforth, its development takes place on a commercial basis only. Thus, this driver is no longer included in our distribution.
[edit]
Solution
To be able to use your Internet connection you can opt, among others, for one the following approaches:
- Install the driver provided by the commercial manufacturer Linuxant (http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/) and order a license (subject to a fee) to use the driver in its full scope.
- Purchase a modem equipped with a complete and independent chipset. Since these criteria cannot be reliably established on the basis of the modem's package or its outside, we recommend you to use an external serial modem (not USB!). From experience, this kind of connection is always supported under Linux.
- Consider changing to ISDN or even DSL. Make your purchase decision based on the support available for the Linux operating system (kernel 2.6.x).
