SDB:Error Creating a Rescue Floppy in YaST

From openSUSE

Version: 9.0

Symptom

An error message is displayed during the floppy check that takes place when you create a rescue floppy using the YaST module 'System' -> 'Create a Boot, Rescue, or Module Floppy'.

Solution

Despite the error message, a functional rescue floppy is created. This rescue floppy is not bootable or readable and it cannot be mounted because it does not contain any file system. To start the rescue system from a rescue floppy, proceed as follows:

Boot the system from a boot floppy or from the first CD or DVD and select the item Manual Installation from the installation menu. The text-based installation program linuxrc starts. Select the following options and define your settings:

  • Choose Language
  • Select Keyboard Layout

Then select Start installation / system in linuxrc main menu. Insert the created rescue floppy, select Rescue system and enter the floppy as your source medium.

Note:

The purpose of a rescue floppy is fulfilled when the CD-ROM drive cannot be accessed. If you are able to boot from the CD-ROM drive, the rescue system can also be started from the first CD or DVD. For more information about the start and operation of a rescue system, refer to SDB:Use of the Rescue System

The article SDB:Creating Boot and Modules Floppy Disks describes a different method of creating boot, rescue, and module floppies.
