SDB:Double-sided DVDs in SUSE LINUX Professional

Situation

You want to install SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0 or 9.1. After inserting the DVD, one of the following happens:

• Error message:
  "This is a 32-bit computer. You cannot use 64-bit software on it."
• No error message, but the computer boots directly into the installed system
• Black screen

Possible Causes

• You inserted the wrong DVD.
• You selected the correct DVD, but inserted it the wrong way round in the drive.
• DVD is defective.

Solution

The SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0 and 9.1 boxes contain one or two double-sided DVDs. At the center of these DVDs, you will notice a green label. Check the label to make sure you insert the correct DVD or the correct side of the DVD.

SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0

The SUSE LINUX Professional 9.0 box contains a double-sided DVD.

To install from this DVD, insert the DVD with the label "Side A" face up in the DVD drive. To install additional software later on, insert the requested DVD with the respective label face up.

If you are not able to boot from the DVD, check if your BIOS settings permit booting from DVD or CD.

SUSE LINUX Professional 9.1

The SUSE LINUX Professional 9.1 box contains two double-sided DVDs.

One of these DVDs contains the installation routines for the 32-bit and 64-bit hardware architectures. The other DVD contains optional packages (source code) for the 32-bit and 64-bit hardware architectures.

Installation DVD

The installation DVD bears the following label:

DVD INSTALLATION 32BIT SUSE LINUX PROFESSIONAL SIDE A

and

DVD INSTALLATION 64BIT SUSE LINUX PROFESSIONAL SIDE B

To install SUSE LINUX on a machine with a 32-bit hardware architecture, insert the installation DVD with the label "SIDE A" face up in the DVD drive. To install SUSE LINUX on a machine with a 64-bit hardware architecture, insert the installation DVD with the label "SIDE B" face up in the DVD drive. After rebooting the system, the installation routine should be started automatically.

If you are not able to boot from the DVD, check if your BIOS settings permit booting from DVD or CD.

If the screen remains black even though you inserted the correct DVD and rebooted the system, refer to the section entitled "Defective SUSE LINUX Professional 9.1 Medium".

Source DVD

The source DVD has the following label:

DVD SOURCES 64BIT SUSE LINUX PROFESSIONAL SIDE A

and

DVD SOURCES 32BIT SUSE LINUX PROFESSIONAL SIDE B

To install SUSE LINUX, boot your PC with the installation DVD. The installation DVD also contains the YaST repair system.

To install additional software after a standard installation, insert the requested DVD with the respective label face up. Make sure that you use the side corresponding to your hardware architecture.

Defective SUSE LINUX Professional 9.1 Medium

If you get a black screen even though you inserted the correct DVD, this may be caused by one of the following:

1. The DVD drive is not able to read the DVD because it is dirty or scratched.
   
   Due to the high data density, DVDs are much more sensitive to dirt and scratches than CDs. Avoid touching the DVD directly. Even very small traces of grease from fingerprints can spoil the DVD. Clean the DVD with a soft cloth from the inside out. Do NOT wipe the data area with circular movements. This can spoil the DVD!
   
2. If your DVD seems to be defective, perform the following check:

If the check reveals that the medium is defective, contact support@suse.de, stating your registration code.

If the test does not generate an error message, the medium itself is not defective. One of the reasons why your drive is not able to read the DVD may be a slight alignment error of your DVD drive. If this is the case, install SUSE LINUX from the CDs.
