Situation
You have purchased openSUSE 10.2 and installed it on your system. You now need an application that will not only enable you to receive and send emails, you also want the application to provide you with extensive features like: storing, organizing your emails, calendaring and retrieving your personal information among others. This is where Evolution comes in. With its extensive support for communications and data interchange standards, Evolution can work with existing corporate networks and applications, and provides support for the following features:
integrated connectivity to Novell GroupWise
integrated connectivity to Microsoft Exchange
integrated support for GPG email encryption
improved offline support for IMAP accounts
numerous calendar improvements,support for S/MIME
enhanced contact management
Pidgin instant messaging integration
improved desktop integration.
improved compliance with GNOME's Human interface guidelines
integrated SpamAssassin functionality (with user-defined spam score and whitelist rules in ~/.spamassassin/)
as from 2007 - a connector for Scalix is available.
Procedure
Configuring Evolution for the first time
1.To start Evolution, click on
Computer->More Applications->Office->Evolution Mail and Calendar.
If this is the first time you started it, Evolution starts the setup assistant.
2.Click on Forward button to continue.
3.Next you will be presented with a new screen where you will be asked to enter your identity which are your full name and email address and any optional information you want to include and then click Forward.
4.In the Receiving Email screen, select, for example POP from the Server Type list and complete the following fields. When you are finished click Forward.
Under Configuration, in the Server field, enter your-isp-pop-server-name as your incoming server name. In the User Name field, enter your email address.
From the Authentication Type list, select Password.
5.In the Receiving Options screen, set your preferences and click Forward.
6.In the Sending Email screen, select SMTP from the Server Type list and complete the following fields. When you are finished, click Forward. Under Server Configuration, in the Server field, enter your-isp-smtp-server-name. Under the Authentication list, select Login and enter your SMTP user name (full email address).
7.In the account management screen type the name you would like the account to be called.
8.In the time zone screen select your corresponding time zone for your country and click Forward.
9.Then click apply to complete and store your new email client configuration.
Configuring additional Email Address in Evolution
1.From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
2.Select Mail Accounts, and click Add(+).
3.In the Account Management screen, enter a name to identify this account and click Forward.
4.Go to procedure number 3 in “Configuring Evolution for the first time” to continue the configuration.
Working with Evolution
Press Ctrl-N to open a new item for whatever part of Evolution you're working in. In mail, this creates a new message. If you're in the address book, Ctrl-N creates a new contact card, and in the calendar, Ctrl-N creates a new appointment.
Using Evolution E-Mail
Send and Receive Mail
Press F9, click the Get Mail button on the toolbar, or click File+Get Mail.
Navigate the Message List with the Keyboard
Press ] or . to jump to the next unread message. Press [ or , to go to the previous unread message. Use the arrow keys to move up and down the list of all messages.
Move the Display Up and Down in the Preview Pane
Press the Spacebar to move down a page. Press Backspace to move up a page.
Reply To a Message
To reply only to the sender of the message, click Reply in the toolbar, or press Ctrl-R. To reply to the sender and all the other visible recipients of the message, click Reply to All or press Shift-Ctrl-R.
Forward a Message
Select the message or messages you want to forward, then click Forward in the toolbar,or press Ctrl-F.
Open a Message In a New Window
Double-click the message you want to view, or select it and press Enter or Ctrl-O.
Create Filters and Virtual Folders
Right-click a message and select Create Rule From Message.
Add a Sender to the Address Book
Select a message then click Message+Add Sender to Address Book. You can also right-click any e-mail address, then click Add to Address Book.
Using Evolution Calendar
Create a New Appointment
Click on File->New->Appointment or press Ctrl-Shift-A. You can also click in any blank spot in the calendar and start typing to create a new appointment entry.
Create a New Task
Click on File->New->Task or press Ctrl-Shift-T.
Using the Evolution Address Book
Edit a Contact
Double-click the contact's address card to change details.
Delete a Contact
Right-click a contact, then click on Delete; or select a contact, then click on Delete on the toolbar.
Send E-Mail To a Contact
Right-click a contact, then click Send Message to Contact.
Create a New Contact
Double-click a blank space in the contact manager to create a new address card, or right-click anywhere in the address book and select New Contact. You can also click File->New->Contact or press Ctrl-Shift-C.
