SDB:/dev/null Damaged Again and Again

Symptom

You get an error message indicating (directly or indirectly) problems with the device file /dev/null.

For example:

  bash: /dev/null: Permission denied

Only users connecting to the Internet via modem are affected.

Cause

The program wvdial modifies the device file /dev/null when an Internet connection is set up.

Solution

Use YOU (YaST Online Update) to install the update available for the package wvdial.
