From openSUSE
openSUSE 11.0 is the next community release that incorporates new features from both the community and internal development. It will be done for the x86, x86-64 and ppc platforms.
Major areas of interest:
- improved 1 CD install (no longer network bound)
- UMTS support
- enhance software update stack
- slim down installation
- "cool" look for installation
- KDE: Use KDE4 instead of KDE3 as default
- GNOME 2.22

- Milestone: KDE strategy is in place (KDE4.0, KDE 4.1 or 3.5) - If it turns out to be a no-go, it has to be corrected till component freeze

- Note: this week it's earlier due to other products blocking
- Milestone: No more features in state "Evaluation" in FATE.
- Milestone: Toolchain is feature frozen (unless gcc 4.3 still not ready)

- Milestone: All packages submitted latest POT file into SVN
Mon, Apr 7 Component freeze for beta1, crypto freeze
- Milestone: We have settled for a KDE branch to go for
- Milestone: Feature and version freeze for the base system
- Milestone: Kernel and install works on most targeted machines.
- Milestone: Packages containing cryptographic routines are frozen (ECR)
- Preliminary Authoring Deadline for localized doc files (ADL loc prelim)
Thu, Apr 17 openSUSE 11.0 Beta 1 release
- Milestone: installation workflow is feature frozen
- Proofreading of all software starts so that we have a new baseline.
- Milestone: Feature and version freeze for the complete distribution (exception: patchlevel update of leaf packages until Beta1+)
- Milestone: First localized build
- Milestone: Complete string freeze
- Milestone: All features are coding and function complete.
- Milestone: Kernel and install works on all targeted machines.
- Milestone: Last round of software translation starts - "hard text freeze"
- Milestone: Documentation deadline ("authoring deadline") for localized manuals, proofing starts, first source drop (locdrop) to Localization for volume estimates
- Milestone: all new desktop applications, incl. KDE 4 apps, to ship with the product are integrated
Mon, Apr 21 Main translation round

- 12:00 CEST: Developers to check in the POTs for the 2nd cycle of software translation

- Only showstopper and security bugfixes get integrated.
- Milestone: Final drop of all manuals for novell.com/documentation (and ESD for download.novell.com) to rballard

- Release on the ftp server

Fri, Jun 20 openSUSE 11.0 post proof reading starts
- Proofreading of all software that was not completely proof-read during the normal openSUSE 11.0 cycle so that we have a new baseline.
