Announcing Hack Week (June 24 2007)

At Novell we've been planning a special internal event that will run this week, from June 25th to 29th. We're calling it Hack Week. During Hack Week, our entire Linux engineering team -- hundreds of people -- will be working on whatever Linux or open source projects interest them. Everyone will work alone or in teams, on existing open source projects or new ideas of their own. No one will tell them what or what not to do -- it's a free week for free hacking, driven by individual passion.

Results of Survey on Use of Proprietary Software (June 20 2007)

The results of the survey we did on proprietary software has been published: It shows that we ship on the media some software which is hardly used (e.g. PlanMaker, SEPsesam etc.). Software which is hardly used we don't need to ship on our media. Therefor the suggestion is to drop some software totally and offer some software only via ftp. To be discussed on opensuse-project.

SUSE Linux 9.3 Security Support Discontinued (June 18 2007)

With todays release of the CUPS bugfix/security fix update we have released the last security update or SUSE Linux 9.3. It is now officially discontinued and out of support. Read the announcement for some statistics.

openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 5 (Jun 14 2007)

The fifth Alpha release of openSUSE 10.3 has been released. First time two one installation media are offered: a GNOME CD and a KDE CD. Some annoying bugs were already discovered.

Survey on Commercial Software (June 5 2007)

We like to know a bit more about the usage of proprietary software we ship on some versions of our openSUSE distribution. Therefore we created a 16 question survey and ask you to participate and give us feedback. The survey is online till June 12.

openSUSE 10.3 Roadmap Published (May 9 2007)

Andreas Jaeger announced the final roadmap for openSUSE 10.3. openSUSE 10.3 is the next release that incorporates new features from both the community and Novell internal development. The final public release is scheduled for 4th October.

openSUSE survey results now online (May 4 2007)

The openSUSE survey results are now online. The survey was live for almost 3 months and more than 27,000 user participated and gave us feeback how they use openSUSE what's important for them etc. The results are now available here

FOSDEM 2007 Slides and Recordings Online (Mar 19 2007)

openSUSE participated in the seventh Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (commonly known as FOSDEM). All talks that were given in the openSUSE "DevRoom" have been recorded (in audio and video) and are together with the slides now available from FOSDEM2007.

New Wikis Available: nl and pl (Feb 7 2007)

There are two new languages now available for the openSUSE wiki. http://nl.opensuse.org (Dutch) is now available thanks Freek de Kruijf, Rinse de Vries and Matthias Van Gestel, and http://pl.opensuse.org (Polish) is also now available thanks Rafal Kwasny and Rzoolu.

openSUSE Project Manager Interviewed (Feb 6 2007)

Andreas Jaeger, the openSUSE Technical Project Manager, was interviewed by Open Addict. Issues touched upon include the Novell/MS deal.

YaSTRS - New Tool for Easily Adding YaST Repositories (Feb 3 2007)

YaSTRS is a new simple online tool for adding YaST repositories. It displays a list of repositories suitable for the target machine, let's the user pick which repositories he is interested in, and generate a shell script that adds them. It tries to be like easy urpmi for SUSE.

SUSE Style Guides Open to the Community (29 Jan 2007)

Because of increasing community interest in the style guidelines of SUSE documentation and program texts, these style guides are now released as an openSUSE project hosted by Novell Forge.

openSUSE 10.2 Live DVD available (Jan 26 2007)

The openSUSE 10.2 Live DVD is now available. The image has a size of 1.7 GB and can be used on every x86 compatible system with at least 512 MB of memory. It contains a base desktop system (KDE and Gnome) with applications for office, multimedia and internet usage.

New Mailinglists - networking/usability (Jan 25 2007)

Two new mailing lists called opensuse-networking and opensuse-usability were created. Beside the two new lists we also moved the internal packager list to the opensuse-packaging list.

Complete openSUSE Build Service under GPL Available (Jan 24 2007)

From today on the openSUSE Build Service (OBS) is available under the GPL license for everybody. Further details can be found in the announcement.

openSUSE @ FOSDEM 2007 Call for Papers/Speakers/Participants (Dec 22 2006)

The openSUSE project will be taking part at FOSDEM 2007! Besides representing openSUSE with a booth, we managed to get one of the greatly demanded "devrooms", to conduct sessions centered around the openSUSE project. Christoph has posted a call for papers, speakers and participants.

"Lessons for Lizards" Started (Dec 18 2006)

"Lessons for Lizards" is a new way to learn about openSUSE. It is a documentation project for and by the community (licensed under GFDL) that will be released on an equal footing with the internally produced documentation. Read the announcement for more information.

The first Beta release of openSUSE 10.2 has been released. This release is only available for i386 and x86_64 architectures and both as a DVD image and CD images. Some annoying bugs were already discovered.

Remastered SUSE Linux 10.1 ISOs (Oct 13 2006)

We have created new CD ISO images and supply delta ISOs from the SUSE Linux 10.1 Goldmaster. This update combines the 10.1 GM and all online updates that we have released for 10.1 so far, including libzypp, which should make the installing and working experience much smoother for everyone.

SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 1 opens 10.2 development

The first Alpha release of SUSE Linux 10.2 has been released. It brings new YaST package manager updates and fresh KDE packages.

Important SUSE Linux 10.1 Update (June 10 2006)

From today on openSUSE provides an important patch for the package management. It contains various bug fixes and performance improvements for YaST and Zen updater. We recommend to install this patch with YaST Online Update (YOU). For that please start YaST manually through the menu and use the 'Online Update' module.

The SUSE Linux 10.1 Live DVD is now available. The Live DVD is a 32-bit x86 based system which contains 4 GB of great Linux software compressed into a 1.7 GB ISO.

openSUSE Build Service Becomes Productive (May 31 2006)

Adrian announced that the openSUSE build service, although still in alpha phase, will be used from now on for producing the supplementary updates. The packages are accessible via software.opensuse.org, for installation instructions see the Build_Service/User documentation.

Localized Wikis and SDB Import (Feb 1 2006)

www.opensuse.org has been updated to MediaWiki version 1.5. We are able to host localized wiki instances now, starting with Spanish, French and German. Also the support database (SDB) articles have been imported into the wikis.

Voting in Bugzilla (Jan 27 2006)

Voting for reports against SUSE Linux 10.1 in Novell's Bugzilla is now enabled. Voting in Bugzilla is intended for orientation purposes only -- not for specific priorisation / resource allocation. For further information on voting, please refer to this page.

AppArmor Open Sourced (Jan 10 2006)
