OpenSUSE Community

From openSUSE

Geeko What is the openSUSE community and who is a member of it? This is a recurring subject on the openSUSE mailing-lists. A true answer is difficult to give. Some people think that anybody using openSUSE is a member of the community. Others think that being a member requires some sort of involvement: subscription to a list, registration as wiki editor through the Novell login... In fact, if you think you are a member, want to be a member, ask if you are a member, then you probably are one :-). Novell employees work on openSUSE in two ways; they are paid to work on certain parts of openSUSE, SLED and SLES, but many of them are also confirmed Linux addicts and passionate Linux advocates who do a lot on their own time. Of course they are members.

Community Structure

The openSUSE Community is organized into many teams that concentrate on different areas of interest within the distribution or the project in general.

  • The openSUSE Guiding Principles describe the goals of the openSUSE project and how it is driven.
  • An openSUSE Board consisting of Novell employees and community members was set up to lead the overall project.
  • openSUSE Members are specifically acknowledged contributors who have brought a continued and substantial contribution to the project, who enjoy some perks and will elect the next openSUSE board.
  • openSUSE Ambassadors are the helping Hands to spread the word of openSUSE

Community specific wiki pages

Image:scribus48.png

Any page author/editor is de facto a community member, so any wiki page is done by the community.

However some pages are more specifically geared towards community interaction.

The Wiki (what you are reading now), is available in many languages, and is continually being translated into many more. Visit the Translation Team to help with this significant task.

People of openSUSE is a project which aims to make the people behind the openSUSE project and the distribution more visible.

If you, for example, always wanted to know what motivates a specific contributer to participate, what he thinks about the future of the openSUSE project, and whether he turns off his computer during a thunderstorm (and other non-openSUSE related facts) - go read the interview.
