Usenet (Nyhetsgruppe)

Usenet operates in a similar fashion to mailing lists. It consists of newsgroups to which you have to subscribe using newsgroup reader software, such as KNode.

You have to connect to a Usenet server and reader software will pull list of newsgroups. Select groups that you want to read (this is called subscribe) and you are good to go. Most of Internet Service Providers (ISP) have newsgroups servers and will provide you with information how to configure usenet client.

Usenet may also be available via third-party Web clients, but their services may often be limited and subject to additional costs. The most prominent is Google groups, that works excellent as a search engine, but you can't post to all newsgroups and some newsgroups communities don't like the default format of messages produced by their web interface (alt.os.linux.suse).

For in-depth information about Usenet, see wikipedia:Usenet.

Anbdre SUSE Nyhetsgruppe

There is also a mailinglist to news gateway for all openSUSE and SUSE mailinglists. For the moment it is one-way only, ie from the list to the archive/usenet group. This service is brought to you by Gmane.org.

If you want to post messages to the mailinglists, you need to subscribe to the lists. You can use the nomail subscription (listname+subscribe-nomail@opensuse.org) if you prefer not to receive all postings as mail.

Internett Forum

Web Forums are like bulletin boards. You need no additional software to participate. Your Web browser is sufficient. For in-depth information about Web Forums, see wikipedia:Internet forum.

Wiki

A wiki, like this page, is a Web site that is made for collaborative writing. You need no additional software to participate. A Web browser is enough. For in-depth information about Wikis, see wikipedia:Wiki.

Internett logg

A weblog (or "blog") is a Web site in which openSUSE community members post about things on a regular basis. You need either to subscribe yourself to a blog hosting service or run your own blog software on your Web site. For in-depth information about Blogs see wikipedia:Blog.

  • Planet SUSE is an aggregation of public weblogs written by members of the Novell/SUSE community. Planet SUSE gives an insight into their lives, what they're working on, and what makes them tick, intertwined with the latest SUSE related news.

IRC

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a great way to connect with openSUSE community members in real time. IRC uses popular client software, such as xchat or instant messenger clients that support the IRC protocol. Both are included in openSUSE. Jabber is a great way to connect with openSUSE community members in real time. Jabber is an instant-messaging protocol that is supported by a lot of popular applications such as kopete, pidgin or Psi, so you do not need to install yet another chat-application.

Apart from GoogleTalk and the jabber.org-server there are a lot more servers out there and you will surely find one nearby you. Having an account on any jabber-server enables you to chat with users from all other servers.

Most applications allow you to register from within the client, so you do not even have to visit a server's website. Have a look at the localised version of this wiki-page in order to get hints on which servers you can use in your area.
