Meetings/Status Meeting 2007-06-06/transcript
From openSUSE
18:00 @<henne> Welcome to the openSUSE Status Meeting!
18:00 @<henne> This meeting is meant to discuss the latest developments in and around openSUSE.
18:00 @<henne> The topics for this meeting are:
18:00 @<henne> * Status Distribution
18:00 @<henne> * Status Communication
18:00 @<henne> * Status Buildservice
18:00 @<henne> * Status Events
18:00 @<henne> * Q & A
18:00 @<henne> first topic. Distribution
18:01 @<henne> AJaeger?
18:01 <AJaeger> Hi Guys,
18:01 <AJaeger> the most significant changes to the distribution the last weeks
18:01 <AJaeger> were the new KDE4 packages, the update of the Linux kernel to
18:01 <AJaeger> 2.6.22, the update to Emacs 22.1, OpenOffice.org 2.2, using
18:01 <AJaeger> Pidgin instead of gaim. We also enabled rpmlint in the build
18:01 <AJaeger> process for stricter checks.
18:01 <AJaeger> Our Czech packagers team has created a page where they have some
18:01 <AJaeger> packages they would like to maintain in the build service
18:01 <AJaeger> together with community members. If you're interested, please check:
18:01 <AJaeger> http://en.opensuse.org/Czech_Packagers_Team/Packages_sorted_by_maintainer
18:01 <AJaeger> Questions, comments, discussion?
18:01 @<henne> not?
18:01 <AJaeger> I've been last week at Linuxtag and just recovered from my backlog ;-)
18:02 <AJaeger> henne: Give everybody a chance :-)
18:02 @<henne> next topic then?
18:02 <Beineri> is there also a page for non-czech packages? :-)
18:02 <AJaeger> Beineri: Not yet - but if somebody wants to create one.
18:02 @<henne> why not put these packages into a repo?
18:02 <AJaeger> But these are normal packages - just maintained by Czech developers.
18:02 @<henne> this is utterly comlicated :)
18:03 <AJaeger> henne: Sounds like a good idea. Will you tell Vladimir?
18:03 @<henne> s/m/mp/
18:03 @<henne> will do
18:03 @<henne> any other questions regarding the distribution?
18:03 <Nix> argus should go in my server:monitoring project...
18:03 <AJaeger> First AI: Henne to talk to Vladimir about putting these packages into Buildservice.
18:04 <Nix> possibly fping also...
18:04 * Beineri wonders about such basic pacakges like pinfo and less being offered
18:04 <AJaeger> Nix: tell anosek@novell.com .
18:04 <AJaeger> He's listed as maintainer.
18:04 @<henne> alright
18:04 @<henne> next topic then
18:04 * Nix nods
18:04 @<henne> Status Communication (web, mail, etc.)
18:04 @<henne> localhorst?
18:04 <aka_druid_> yawn
18:04 <localhorst> one moment!
18:05 <localhorst> - buqsquashing (name is not fixed :-)): 16-17.06.2007 see page in the wiki or the mails from Francis. I will expand the page
next week, add some kind of guidelines, and talk to suse developers so we have good support. So more on that topic next week, feel
free to add you thoughts to the discussion on the project and/or factory list. apokryphos: which list do you prefer?
18:05 <localhorst> this is still distribution i guess
18:05 <apokryphos> not sure; I guess it's appropriate in either
18:05 <apokryphos> looking forward to it :)
18:05 @<henne> factory please
18:05 <AJaeger> So do I!
18:06 <localhorst> ok, so more on this next week, stay tuned
18:06 <localhorst> - wiki: nothing new from me ... darix is working on babel. I still have wikis to set up, but no time.
18:06 <localhorst> Speaking for Frank: the new skin is widely accepted and most bugs are gone, enhancements went in ...
18:07 <localhorst> - question from the wiki ... puh, i just looked fast over the proposal and i'm not sure ... let's discuss this on project (even
18:07 <localhorst> this is a wiki topic, i guess it fits more there)
18:07 <localhorst> questions?
18:07 @<henne> are you talking about the website split?
18:07 <localhorst> yes
18:07 <localhorst> sorry, i could be more -vvv
18:08 @<henne> yes. the website split topic is nothing for a status meeting. this has to be discussed on the -wiki list
18:08 <AJaeger> One note - fits under distribution as well as under communication: We have a new survey about proprietary software and like to get your feedback.
18:08 <AJaeger> For details: See my email on opensuse-announce.
18:08 @<henne> for mailinglists: the last two mailinglists will be migrated on tuesday
18:09 <apokryphos> is the one CD KDE and one cd GNOME still on target to be released for alpha5?
18:09 <Beineri> survey => http://www.surveymonkey.com/Users/33889499/Surveys/413433852485/CC07C39C-761F-4059-8A51-5DAE03B24ACE.asp?U=413433852485&DO_NOT_COPY_THIS_LINK
18:09 <bill-barriere> no question about if we would like to have IIS in there :P
18:09 <apokryphos> and, when will sp1 be released? ;)
18:09 @<henne> and the old names and syntax are turned off. like announced on -announce
18:09 <AJaeger> apokryphos: I'm not sure whether we make it for alpha4, we're still playing around...
18:09 <Beineri> alpha 4?
18:09 @<henne> alpha 5 of course
18:10 @<henne> apokryphos: ask your sales representative :)
18:10 <Beineri> very soon now
18:10 <apokryphos> I get the impression opensuse guys are still very busy with it 8)
18:10 @<henne> anything else regarding communication?
18:11 @<henne> apokryphos: we have public holiday after public holiday this time of year
18:11 <AJaeger> apokryphos: And quite some were in Berlin last week...
18:11 <apokryphos> hm, must consider living there ;)
18:11 @<henne> okay. next topic then. Status BuildService
18:11 <apokryphos> yeah, Linuxtag looked great :)
18:12 @<henne> who can cover that?
18:12 <AJaeger> Adrian is hiking.
18:12 @<henne> adrianS?
18:12 @<henne> well as far as i know there are no real news there
18:12 <AJaeger> I'm not sure who can cover, so let's just ask for questions.
18:12 <apokryphos> new hardware coming in very soon now, I hear
18:12 <AJaeger> Oh, one note: We're getting some extra hardware. The first machine is already in the rack more to come soon - and then we'll announce it properly.
18:13 <AJaeger> apokryphos: You're too fast for me ;-)
18:13 <apokryphos> sounds great
18:13 @<henne> okay any questions regarding the BS?
18:13 @<henne> nothing?
18:14 @<henne> this might be the fastest meeting we ever held 8)
18:14 <_Marcus_> you are pushing qwuite fast too ;)
18:14 @<henne> next topic then: Status Events
18:14 @<henne> localhorst?
18:14 <localhorst> - LWE SF is settled, .org pavilion (sp?) for openSUSE
18:14 <localhorst> - we will sponsor akademy and guadec, of course also a lot of ppl from SUSE/Novell will be there
18:14 <localhorst> - Froscon: we try to be there, stay tuned
18:14 @<henne> _Marcus_: look out of the window!
18:15 <localhorst> i have no overview atm what talks we will have, Beineri do you know for akademy?
18:15 <apokryphos> no opensuse talk ;)
18:15 <Beineri> Lubos will make one about Composited Desktop iirc
18:16 <Beineri> and there will be some KDE Developement on openSUSE Bof or so I heard :-)
18:16 <localhorst> anyway, we will setup pages in the wiki for each event as usuall
18:16 @<henne> cschum/adrian are going trying to have a BOF on KDE development with openSUSE
18:16 @<henne> are there any event we are missing?
18:16 @<henne> events*
18:16 <apokryphos> nice
18:16 <localhorst> bierfest!
18:17 <localhorst> :-)
18:17 * henne wont miss that
18:17 @<henne> okay. any questions regarding events?
18:18 @<henne> nothing?
18:18 <localhorst> maybe one thing, please look at my mail on project about linuxtag, this is also for all other events in the future
18:18 <AJaeger> just one comment: "We are sponsoring" means that "Novell" sponsors - not that openSUSE sponsors.
18:18 <localhorst> arent we all a little bit novell? :-)
18:18 <aka_druid_> localhorst: yeah, sometimes Im really bitter
18:18 <AJaeger> localhorst: Just a wee bit.
18:19 * henne wonders what the difference is. novell is just a subset of opensuse :)
18:19 <dl9pf> :)
18:19 <bill-barriere> hehe
18:19 <localhorst> put that on the frontpage henne! :.-)
18:19 <apokryphos> henne: not the other way around? :o
18:19 @<henne> oki doki. no questions for events anymore?
18:20 @<henne> any other general questions?
18:20 <aka_druid_> henne: how are you doing?
18:20 <aka_druid_> sorry sorry
18:20 <aka_druid_> :o)
18:20 @<henne> AI aka_druid_: think of a new joke for the next meeting
18:20 <aka_druid_> ACK!
18:21 <apokryphos> worth raising the ML issue, perhaps?
18:21 <aka_druid_> apokryphos: which?
18:21 @<henne> the ML issue?
18:21 <aka_druid_> there are so many...
18:21 <bill-barriere> apokryphos, A issues? Oo
18:21 <apokryphos> couldn't we make the -offtopic list public and are there possibly more moderators that could help out?
18:21 <apokryphos> public, as in, public archives
18:21 @<henne> apokryphos: why do we need that?
18:21 <cb400f> it's on the wiki page now at least
18:21 <bill-barriere> well its not like it was worth archiving
18:22 @<henne> i thought the purpose of that list is chatting. this shouldnt be archived....
18:22 <apokryphos> I mean, silly things in opensuse@ are one thing, but it's even more counterproductive when it goes over onto the -project list
18:22 <cb400f> henne: probably many use the archieve as a list of available lists
18:23 @<henne> i can make an entry there
18:23 <apokryphos> henne: but it's still a mailing list
18:23 @<henne> that points to a webpage that say: "no archive. sorry!"
18:23 <apokryphos> mailing lists should be archived...
18:23 <apokryphos> perhaps it would encourage more people to talk on there as well
18:24 * henne fails to see why
18:24 @<henne> i see the point that someone is looking trough the list as authorative list on what we have
18:25 @<henne> but why would i need to archive general offtopic chatting?
18:25 <apokryphos> perhaps I shouldn't talk for everyone else, but I always look at a ML archive generally before signing up
18:25 <apokryphos> it's not really the most important issue though
18:25 <localhorst> everthing is archived ... it's 2007, wake up! :-)
18:25 @<henne> lets try the empty page first okay?
18:25 <apokryphos> (important issue is how to filter more stuff onto that list instead of opensuse@ or o-project and about moderation)
18:25 <apokryphos> ok
18:26 @<henne> apokryphos: i already work on that with some people
18:26 <aka_druid_> henne: I want a shotgun
18:26 <bill-barriere> :)
18:26 @<henne> there will be 2 or 3 peepz that will have the power to officially end a thread
18:26 <localhorst> with a shotgun?
18:26 @<henne> something like operators in irc
18:27 * Nix wonders if that will actually work :-)
18:27 * AJaeger thinks we should at least give it a try ;-)
18:27 <aka_druid_> henne: jdd wants to be one,Im sure
18:27 @<henne> Nix: it did when chris or i actually had the time to read the list
18:27 <cb400f> will people be "warned" beforehand?
18:28 <aka_druid_> cb400f: with a shotgun?
18:28 @<henne> cb400f: sure. we will use common sense there...
18:28 <cb400f> perhaps the welcome message could say "support only", offtopic will be halted, use o-offtopic@ for that
18:29 @<henne> cb400f: if you write something up and send it to me ill include it
18:29 <aka_druid_> that solves almost all problems, I guess
18:29 <aka_druid_> there will be only the "normal" noise alexey and other IWEs introduce
18:29 <aka_druid_> !iwe
18:29 @<henne> anything else we need to look at?
18:29 @<henne> or any other questions?
18:29 <bill-barriere> heh, alexey hasnt come close to M9 yet
18:30 <apokryphos> any news on the board + guidelines? I guess they're still being tinkered with?
18:30 * cb400f eagerly awaits draft 2
18:30 <localhorst> cornelius will send a new draft soon ...
18:30 @<henne> we are looking into way to implement this
18:30 <aka_druid_> 4 drafts make a final, dont forget
18:30 <aka_druid_> (dont ask me where Ive decided on that rule)
18:30 <apokryphos> cool
18:31 @<henne> ways*
18:31 <Beineri> cb400f: did you say that you want a second draft? ;-)
18:31 <cb400f> hehe.. I'm demanding
18:32 @<henne> cornelius will send it and then we have to discuss how to kick that off
18:32 @<henne> i guess we will make a proposal how and then lets see if everybody agrees :)
18:33 @<henne> anything else?
18:34 @<henne> then we are finished. if you have anything else dont hesitate to discuss it here or on the apropiate mailinglist
18:34 <aka_druid_> EOM
